A “Health claim”means any claim that states, suggests or implies that a relationship exists between a food category, a food or one of its constituents and health. (Article 13 claim).
A “Reduction of disease risk claim”means any health claim that states, suggests or implies that the consumption of a food category, a food or one of its constituents significantly reduces a risk factor in the development of a human disease. (Article 14 claim).
An application may either be generic or ingredient specific which is an option for both article 13 and 14. In practical terms generic applications are most commonly applied for by industry organizations as they do not protect the investment made by a single company.
A product specific claim is a better investment though it is generally a very expensive route to achieve a claim.
