Food labeling legislation

The European regulation 1169/2011 sets the rules for food information to consumers which cover all said about mandatory food information, presentation of the product, ingredient list etc.

Regulation 1169/2001/EC applies as overall legislation for all food products where labeling is mandatory. It is the most comprehensive labeling in the EU history ever and at the same time making it easier to evaluate whether a specific label meets requirements or not.

However a “category specific” labeling requirement always supersedes requirements laid down in regulation 1169/2001/EC.

As a consequence hereof it is imperative to know all specific legislation concerning a specific food category.
